Nuclear weapons are the biggest threat to the human society, that’s the popular belief. Every world leader of prominence has one speech where he/she has abhorred the use of nuclear weapons. However, the very same world leader is intent on packing up their country’s arsenal with nuclear warheads. Right now the situation is that almost every big nation has nuclear weapons in its arsenal. Most of the big nations with nuclear capabilities have signed the “no-first use” pact that prohibits them from taking that first step towards a nuclear Armageddon.
Someone might ask what good is a nuclear weapon if you cannot use it. The answer is a bit more complex than what you would expect. Right now nuclear warheads are the best bargaining tools in the world. Nuclear weapons help keep the world in a peaceful balance. With all the disputes in the Middle East and south-east Asia, nuclear weapons are acting as the peacekeepers.
As a famous saying goes “the best weapon is the one you never have to use”, likewise the nuclear weapons act as a deterrent for all the budding Hitters and Mussolinis from launching another World War. human rights groups might cry themselves hoarse in favor of complete nuclear disarmament but they cannot run away from this truth. The fact remains that nuclear weapons are the reason why the world has managed to steer clear of World Wars since the first nuclear bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Therefore a nuke-free world will be achieved only if the scientists can come up with something worse. Mankind is like a baby and nuclear warhead is its favorite toy, it’s a long way before nuclear-disarmament becomes a viable option.
