Anaphylaxis is the cause of 1500 deaths every year. While the number might not sound extremely big, those deaths, in big part, are easily avoidable. If people are aware of the symptoms as well as the first-line treatment, many deaths can be prevented.
Anaphylaxis is caused mainly by medication, foods and insect bites and anywhere from half to two percent of the world's population experience anaphylaxis during their lifetime.
Raising awareness of it is important and to do her part, Boston Legal star Julie Bowen, on May 21, kicked off Raise Your Hand for Anaphylaxis Awereness competition. Everyone has the chance to virtually raise their hand for anaphylaxis awereness as well as for their school district. Four school districts with the most raised hands will be awarded educational grants of $15 000 by Mylan Specialty L.P. In order to raise your hand you need to go to www.Anaphylaxis101.com. After signing in find your school district from the list to say which school district you are raising your hand for. You are also invited to share your own personal stories and reasons for raising your hand and why you think anayphylaxis awareness is important. The competition runs through October 1, 2013 and you can raise your hand one every day - as they all count towards the number of raised hands in your school district.
